General Information of Gear
|
Spur Gears
|
Helical GearsHelical gears are gears where the leading edges of the teeth are not parallel to the axis of the rotation but are set at an angle. Since the gear is curved , the angling causes the tooth shape to be a segment of helix. The angled teeth engage more gradually than do spur gear teeth causing them to run more smoothing & quietly.

Worm & Worm WheelA worm is a gear which has one tooth. The tooth is in the form of a screw thread.A worm wheel meshes with the worm. The worm wheel is a helical gear with teeth inclined so that they can engage with the thread like worm. The worm wheel transmits torque & rotary motion through a right angle.Worm & gear sets are a simple & compact way to achieve a high torque , low speed gear ratio.
For eg. Helical gear are normally limited to gear ratio of less than 10 : 1 while worm & gear sets vary from 10 : 1 to 500 : 1. |
